China Air Force: WZ-19E (Glede-Yuan), Dedicated Attack HelicopterUnofficialChina December 25, 2019 0 COMMENTS
Wuzhi-19E (code: WZ-19, derived from Z-19) is an armed helicopter and reconnaissance helicopter developed, developed and manufactured by AVIC Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing Company and 602 Helicopter Research Institute. It is based on the Z-9, H410A, H425, and H450 civilian helicopters. The military-derived version is named “Black Hurricane” (English: Black Hurricane). Its name is taken from the important character “Glede” Li Zhi in “Water Margin”, which indicates that this type of armed helicopter is also as extraordinary as Liangshan heroes.
The Chinese alias of Z-19E “Glede” is to take its meaning of “patrol bird” and use “鳶” to show the essential characteristics of the model. The full English name is “WZ-19E Yuan Dedicated Attack Helicopter”, where “Yuan” stands for “Yours Useful Available Necessities”, which means “necessary equipment that is useful and available to you!” means that the WuZhi-19E will be in the military trade market with good reputation, and broad market prospects.
The Wuzhi-19 was developed from the H-425 helicopter, and the H-425 passed the acceptance inspection of the National Science, Technology and Industry Commission in 2007. This shows that the Zhi-9 series helicopters were only developed in 2007 to meet the needs of serialization. The conditions of the armed helicopters and insufficient power are the main constraints for the development of the tandem special armed helicopters in the past 20 years.
The emergency power of the turbo-9A engine (French “Aheye-1C”) used by the Zhi-9 is 560 kilowatts and the continuous power is 437 kilowatts. Coupled with the limited performance of the transmission system, the helicopter power load is low and it is difficult to use Basically developed a satisfactory dedicated gunship. With the introduction of the more powerful “Aheye-2C” engine in China (emergency power of 718 kilowatts and continuous power of 618 kilowatts), the difficulty in restricting the development of special-purpose armed helicopters for the Zhi-9 helicopter has been relatively eased. Although China had developed the Wuzhi-10 at that time, due to engine and other issues, the development was not smooth. For the sake of insurance, the relevant departments initiated the development of light armed helicopters based on the H-425 helicopter. The result is the well-known Wuzhi-19.
The Wuzhi-19 is an improved version of the Zhi-19 (Z-19) gunship. The latter is 12 meters long, 4.01 meters high, with a maximum takeoff weight of 4.5 tons, a cruise speed of 245 kilometers per hour, a maximum speed of 305 kms per hour, and a range of 800 kms. The maximum take-off weight of the Zhi-19E is lighter than its own model, reaching 4.25 tons.
The top of Wuzhi-19 is equipped with a phased array millimeter wave radar. The maximum ammunition load of the Wuzhi-19 reconnaissance gunship is about 1200 kg, which is skipped by the 1,000 kg load of the Italian A-129 gunship.
The WZ-19E reconnaissance gunship can mount four groups of four AKD-9 air-to-ground missiles in four groups. The AKD-9 air-to-ground missile is 16 kg lighter than the AKD-10 air-to-ground missile. It weighs 30 kg and has a range of 5,000 meters. The static armor-breaking capacity of the tandem charged warhead is 1200 mm, which is sufficient for the third generation of Europe, the United States, and Russia Main battle tank!
Wuzhi-19 adopts the tandem layout popular with special armed helicopters. Although the shape is very different from H-425, Wuzhi-19 inherits H-425’s power system and lift system. It is reported that Wuzhi-19 also broadened the power limit of the transmission system, improved power utilization efficiency, and increased the helicopter power-to-load ratio. A spherical photoelectric turret is installed below the nose. From the appearance, the photoelectric turret may be directly taken from the photoelectric turret equipped with the Zhi-9WZ or modified accordingly.
The Wuzhi-19 uses a vitrified cockpit. The pilot and weapon operator cockpits are equipped with large-size LCD monitors and helmet display targeting systems. According to analysis, the Wuzhi-19 avionics system uses the GJB289A data bus. The display, navigation system, and electronic warfare system are integrated together. The computer comprehensively processes and analyzes the data collected by each sensor, and displays the processed information on the cockpit display.
The Wuzhi-19 has two short wings in the front of the fuselage, and two weapon pylons under each short wing. Observed from a large number of published pictures, the outer wing of the short wing can carry 4 consecutive mounted composite pylons. It is used to carry AKD-9 anti-tank missiles or “Tianyan-90” air-to-air missiles. The inner rack can be used to mount aviation rocket launch nests, machine guns or artillery pods. In the past, it was generally believed that the anti-tank missiles equipped with Wuzhi-19 were AKD-10 (“Blue Arrow-7”). According to estimates, the payload of Wuzhi-19 should have 8 AKD-10 anti-tank missiles with about 50 kg.
The anti-tank missile currently mounted on Wuzhi-19 is not AKD-10, but a smaller AKD-9 anti-tank missile. The AKD-9 missile is 1560 mm long, has a diameter of 140 mm, a maximum range of 6 kilometers, and a thickness of 300 mm (inclination angle of 68 °). The missile uses laser semi-active guidance. It should also use the AKD-10 missile. Multi-target attack mode: one is to launch missiles at intervals of several seconds, using a laser illuminator, and the first missile quickly provides guidance for the second missile after hitting the target; the other is pulsed firing, using multiple illuminators to each other Swapping laser codes for single guidance can guide more missiles.
In addition to AKD-9 anti-tank missiles, Wuzhi-19 can also carry HF-25 (57-1 rockets) or HF-7D rocket launch nests (90-1 90mm rockets) to perform ground strike missions. The “Tianyan-90” air-to-air missile is also the main airborne weapon of the Wuzhi-19. Because it is a specially developed helicopter air-to-air missile, its performance is better than that of such as “Stinger” and “Northwest Wind”. It is developed on the basis of portable air defense missiles.
Wuzhi-19 can also mount 23mm machine gun pods or 12.7mm machine gun pods according to mission requirements. At present, Harbin Jiancheng Group has developed the “Sky Arrow” 90mm semi-active laser-guided rocket. Compared with air-launched anti-tank missiles, navigation air-launched rockets are comparable to air-launched anti-tank missiles, but the unit price is very competitive.
Due to its price is much lower than air-launched anti-tank missiles, and its excellent performance and economic affordability have made guided rockets flying munitions developing in many countries in recent years. Therefore, in the future, Wuzhi-19 may also be equipped with guided rockets. The guided rockets are positioned between AKD-9 anti-tank missiles and uncontrolled aerial rockets, which will help increase the type and attack capability of the aircraft’s ground-attack ammunition.
The mass-produced Wuzhi-19 in the later period has begun to be equipped with millimeter-wave radar. Some analysts pointed out that the millimeter-wave radar equipped with Wuzhi-19 adopts an active phased array system, and its comprehensive performance is ahead of the mechanical scanning system AN / APG- 78 Longbow radar. After the Wuzhi-19 was equipped with millimeter radar, the development of the aircraft’s future anti-tank missiles has aroused everyone’s interest. As we all know, millimeter wave radar radar helps to improve the combat capability of helicopters in severe weather conditions such as sand, dust, rain and snow.
In the future, based on the AKD-9 anti-tank missile, an anti-tank missile similar to the AGM-114L “Haier Method” will be developed. It will use active millimeter wave + inertial guidance. Because the missile has the ability to ignore after launch, the combination of the two will greatly improve the Wuzhi -19 all-weather, multi-target long-range strike capability. In addition, the millimeter-wave radar equipped with Wuzhi-19 is installed at the top of the rotor shaft mast. Wuzhi-19 can hover behind obstacles and use only millimeter-wave radar to detect and lock targets. It launches active millimeter-wave radar-guided missiles in a sudden jump attack. , Suddenly attack the enemy while improving the survivability of the helicopter.
Considering China’s vast territory and complex terrain, Wuzhi-19 needs a certain amount of surplus power to cope with conditions such as high temperature and high plateau. To install machine guns for Wuzhi-19, it must be replaced with a more powerful engine and a more efficient transmission system. The upgrade process of foreign armed helicopters basically involves the upgrade of the power system. Take the well-known AH-1 “Cobra” series of armed helicopters as an example.
The early continuous power of the AH-1G engine was about 810 kilowatts. The AH-1Z increased to 1267 kilowatts, and the increase in engine power allowed the AH-1Z to carry up to 16 AGM-114 missiles and 2 AIM-9M air-to-air missiles, with an attack capability exceeding that of earlier AH-64 armed helicopters. From the current status of the development of helicopter engines in China, it is a realistic choice to replace vortex shaft-9 for Wuzhi-19. The emergency power of vortex shaft-9 is about 998 kilowatts, which can lay a good foundation for future upgrade of Wuzhi-19.
After changing to a more powerful turbo-9 engine, Wuzhi-19 can also add electronic equipment such as integrated electronic warfare systems. The active Wuzhi-19 self-defense system may only include radar warning systems, missile approach warning systems, and infrared jamming missiles. It has not been found that it is equipped with a laser warning system, and its self-defense ability is slightly weaker than that of Wuzhi-10.
In terms of passive protection, refitting the engine can also add composite armor with better ballistic resistance in the cockpit position, enhancing the survivability of Wuzhi-19. Another advantage of changing the engine is that it can mount AKD-10 anti-tank missiles that are heavier and have a longer range. (The active duty Wuzhi-19 has the ability to mount AKD-10, but the Wuzhi-19 is equipped with a small No. 1 AKD-9, this may be to take care of the lower payload of Wuzhi-19).
