The Fifth generation fighter jets such as Chinese J-20 and the US F-35 are known for their stealth properties. Its absence and disappearance in radar also make its defense system difficult to parry. But for the Indians, they claimed that their new radar can help the Indian Air Force to detect stealth fighters such as the J-20 and F-35 in 100km away. Is it really? According to Vietnamese media reports, previously, the Chief of the Indian Air Force stated that India is updating its Su-30MKI equipment, and upgraded to new radars. The new Su-30MKI will be capable to monitor Stealth fighters such as F-35 or J-20 from 100 kilometers away. Although India did not say that they would install that type of radar on the Su-30MKI, many people speculate that the radar should be the passive phased array radar “Irbis-E”.


Irbis-E Radar

The “Irbis-E” radar is currently equipped on Russia’s Su-35. This radar consists of a signal source transmitting at a single frequency. The working principle is to connect the antenna to a radio transmitter to transmit short-pulse signals. These antennas are connected to highly sensitive receivers to amplify the signal reflected from the target.

Some Vietnamese netizens said that although the “Irbis-E” radar is a good radar, it is a Passive phased array radar after all, which means that the radar can only receive signals passively. The mainstream of radar is gradually becoming more and more biased on Active phased array radar. The stealth fighter is likely to cheat the passive phased array radar when the stealth capability is turned on, but the active phased array radar will have an advantage in detecting the stealth fighter.

“Irbis-E” belongs to Russia’s military radar. The Indians speak so loud, why don’t the Russians confirm? Furthermore, the Russian Su-57 was not equipped with such a radar. Why do Indians think that the Su-30MKI’s new radar can detect J-20 and F-35 stealth fighters? Perhaps this is also related to an experience of discovering F-35.

Not long ago, the German equipment company said that at the Berlin Air Show last year, the company used the “Tvernis” passive phrased array radar to track the two US F-35 fighter jets that left after the exhibition and successfully tracked the F-35 in 150 kilometers. After this news was released, there was a stir. Could the stealth capability of the advanced stealth drone of the US military really be broken?

Actually, the German side did not provide tangible evidence, nor did the US military confirm it. In addition, many people said that at the time the F-35 participated in the air show, the need for stealth is questionable. It cannot be said that the passive array radar can track stealth fighter.

However, in the eyes of the Indians, since the Germans can capture the F-35 with the same type of radar, and their Su-30MKI installed similar radars, thus it is to believe that they can detect stealth fighters. In addition, the Indians had previously revealed that their Su-30MKI had discovered the Chinese J-20 fighter jet, but no one believed the claim. What’s interesting is that the Vietnamese also said that if India’s radar can detect J-20 in 100 kilometers away, then they must be able to find the F-35 from 101 kilometers away. In fact, if Indian radars really have this capability, their fighters may escape from the F-35 attack, because the F-35 air-to-air missile AIM-120 has a range of 100 kilometers. However, the range of the F-20 air-to-air missile Perak-15 exceeds 150 kilometers attacking distance. Obviously, the range of 100 kilometers is still underestimated.
