The Pentagon has just confirmed that the assassination of  Qassem Soleimani, Iran’s most powerful general in Iraq, has accomplished.

Soleimani, the head of the elite Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force, had been killed in an airstrike at Baghdad Airport, claimed to be an action to “deter future Iranian attack plans”.

“At the direction of the president, the US military has taken decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad by killing Qassem Soleimani,” a Pentagon statement said.

Soleimani was claimed to be the architect of Tehran’s proxy wars in the Middle East, had “orchestrated” attacks on coalition bases in Iraq over the past few months and “approved the attacks” on the US embassy in Baghdad earlier this week.

President Trump did not immediately comment but tweeted an image of a US flag.

Soleimani was Iran’s most recognizable commander and rose to prominence in the wake of the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq. He was responsible for fighters in Syria shoring up support for President Bashar Assad against the rebels and Isis. He survived several assassinations by the US, Israel and Arab agencies over the past two decades. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani vowed to avenge the killing.

An adviser to Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani quickly warned U.S. President Donald Trump that retaliation from Tehran will be expected.

“Trump through his gamble has dragged the U.S. into the most dangerous situation in the region,” Hessameddin Ashena wrote on the social media app Telegram. “Whoever put his foot beyond the red line should be ready to face its consequences.”

The airport strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of Iran-backed militias in Iraq known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, and five others, including the PMF’s airport protocol officer, Mohammed Reda, in the same air strike assassination, Iraqi officials said.

The strike would have been considered as retaliation Donald Trump on the civilians attack of the US embassy days ago.  However, such assassination plan seems solely by Donald Trump without going through the congress.

This assassination resulted huge crowd of extreme anger civilians protest in Iran against the US hegemony, burning the US national flags. The intention of Donald Trump is obvious. However, this could be another mis-judgement of Trump that Iranian would not be scared off but united together against the US interests, such as Americans, properties, embassy etc.

What retaliation actions from Iran is yet to know.
